Ontario Wine Country - exploring the wineries

Wines made from 100% Ontario grapes can qualify for classification under Ontario's appellation system, the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA), and must be certified by the provincial wine authority to use the descriptor "Ontario wine" and other regulated labeling terms.
Ontario wine is Canadian wine produced in the province of Ontario that is certified by VQA Ontario. Only Wines from 100% Ontario grapes qualify for classification under Ontario's appellation system, the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA), and must be certified by the provincial wine authority to use the descriptor "Ontario wine" and other regulated labelling terms. VQA regulates production standards including grape varietals, wine-making techniques employed, and other requirements and ensures label integrity for consumers. This has caused some issues with a few wineries that do not meet VQA standards. Some wineries are not eligible because they use Ontario grown winter-hardy hybrid grapes that are not recognized by VQA.
Not all wines produced in Ontario are classified as VQA. Many wineries produce both VQA wines and non-VQA wines depending on their business objectives. Non-VQA wines are produced for a number of reasons; grandfathering under the 1988 Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement, “Cellared Wines”, grape varieties, techniques or blends that VQA Ontario does not recognize and are not eligible for certification, etc.
Growing Grapes in Ontario has many weather related challenges. Winters can be extremely harsh with freezing temperatures and a large ambient snow pack which can wreak havoc and damage tender vines. If you have ever been to Toronto in summer you know the humidity can be extreme at times which lends to fungal diseases. That being said experience, techniques and technology are driving the Ontario wine scene to the world stage. Ontario Vineyards are now producing world class wines, sparkling wines and Icewine that is starting to be sold around the World. We are looking forward to meeting some of those growers at Prowein in Düsseldorf Germany in March 2016.
In 2011 Sake started to be produced commercially on a small scale. With easy access to high quality spring water and the continued expansion of Japanese Cuisine locally it was only a matter of time before the two were combined.

Though Icewine's roots can be traced to centuries old German winemakers, there is nothing more quintessentially Canadian than this luscious luxury borne of patience and sub zero bravura. Grapes are left on the vine well into the winter months to concentrate and intensify the flavours, as water content freezes, thaws and dehydrates in each precious Icewine grape.Inniskillin is perfect for pairing. As Canada’s Original Estate Winery, we are a respected winery pioneer committed to producing premium wines from premium grapes grown in Canada for over 35 years. With Wineries in both Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Inniskillin offers a full collection of world renowned, award winning VQA table wines and iconic Icewines made by progressive, artisanal winemakers.
